March 12 – 18 marks Termite Awareness Week. Every year, termites cause more than $5 billion in property damage. Unfortunately, these costs are not usually covered under homeowners’ insurance policies. Do you know how to protect your home from these tiny terrors?

Different Types of Termites

Subterranean Termites

Subterranean termites live in foundational wood, soil, and compost piles around the home. They can be found in all states except Alaska.

Formosan Termites

Formosan termites are the most aggressive termite species. They live in large colonies and are difficult to control once they are established. These termites are mostly found in the South, Southeast, Hawaii, and California.

Dampwood Termites

Dampwood termites typically infest wood with a high moisture content. Typically, these termites are found in Pacific coastal states and southern Florida.

Drywood Termites

Drywood termites infest dry wood and often establish their nests in roofing materials and wooden wall supports. These termites can be found in the Southeast and coastal areas of California.

How to Prevent a Termite Infestation

Make Structures Unattractive to Termites

  • Concrete foundations are less tasty to termites.
  • Leave ventilation space between soil and wood.
  • Cover exposed wood surfaces with a sealant or metal barrier.

Maintain Termite Prevention Elements

  • Ensure you have adequate drainage and grading to keep the foundation dry. If there is a leak, make sure to fix it immediately.
  • Do not plant trees or shrubs too close to your house. The same goes for storing firewood, keep these piles away from your home!
  • Inspect your home periodically! If you see termites, call a professional immediately.
